New Drivers In Alberta Checklist

Did you know that you have to register your vehicle with an Alberta license plate within ninety days of moving to Alberta?

Following the correct procedures while buying, insuring, and registering your car in the province of Alberta is crucial, regardless of whether you are a new driver, recently moved, or recently purchased a new car.

We'll cover all you need to know about vehicle registration in Alberta in this post.

Evidence of ownership

You will need to present proof of ownership, such as a lease agreement, bill of sale, or probated will, when you register your car for the first time. Both your insurance and your car's registration will need this.

Coverages provided by insurance

Auto insurance in Alberta covers a number of important areas, such as:

  • Third-Party Liability: This coverage is required and will shield you in the event that you are held accountable for an accident that results in harm or property damage to other people. A minimum of $200,000 is needed. At Acera, we advise having liability insurance of at least $2 million.
  • Accident Benefits: Regardless of who is at fault, this covers medical costs, rehabilitation, and lost wages in the event that you are hurt in an accident.
  • Collision policy: Regardless of who is at blame, this optional policy covers damage to your car that results from an accident.
  • Complete Coverage: This optional feature guards against non-collision incidents like theft, vandalism, fire, and natural disaster damage.

Evidence of insurance

As proof of insurance for your car, a pink slip—also known as a pink card, insurance card, liability card, or proof of insurance card—shows that you have the bare minimum of liability insurance needed to drive legally in Alberta.

Important insurance details that you need to have on hand in case of an accident are listed on your pink slip. You should always have your pink slip on you when driving, as it is required for vehicle registration. Depending on your option, the majority of insurers now offer pink slips in hard copy or digital format. Typically, your pink slip will include:

  • Your address and name
  • Your insurance company's name and policy number
  • The make and year of your car
  • The dates on which your coverage begins and ends

Recognition

When you visit the registration office, you must have at least one piece of legitimate government-issued identification. This might be:

  • Alberta ID card
  • Canadian passport
  • Alberta driver's license

The name on the ID and the documentation you give the register agent for evidence of ownership and insurance should match. You might need to present further documentation of your name change, like a marriage certificate, if the names do not match.

Inspections of vehicles

If the car is being imported from outside Alberta, it must first pass a vehicle inspection before it can be registered in Alberta. This guarantees that the car satisfies Alberta's safety and equipment standards.

To finish an inspection outside of the province:

  • Purchase a "Request a Vehicle Inspection Form" at any Alberta register to confirm the vehicle's status.
  • Visit a licensed location to have the car inspected. Click here to view a list of authorized motor vehicle inspection facilities.
  • Make any necessary repairs to your car within ten days after the initial inspection if it fails.
  • You will receive a Record of Inspection and an Out of Province Vehicle Inspection Certificate after the car has finished and passed inspection. After the examination is over, you have 14 days to show the Certificate of examination to an Alberta registry agent.

The last procedures for registering a car in Alberta

You can visit a register once you have a pink card, evidence of ownership, a valid government-issued photo ID, and, if required, a completed vehicle inspection. Your car will be registered and given a license plate once all of your paperwork has been examined and approved.

Officially, you're prepared to travel!
